Well, it was bad, but not as bad as this time in a fanfic I'm writing:
In this instance, Charlie figures out Edward's a vampire, and after a heated dispute with Bella, goes to Vampire Court and files suit against Edward, on little to no grounds (Aro went through with it anyway because he just wanted to humiliate Charlie) and says he'll only drop the charges if Edward splits up with Bella.
Then, when the trial (billed by Vampire News as 'The Trial of the Millenia') gets underway, Edward at first seems to be losing due to a combination of him not having very much substantial evidence and Jacob's incompetence as a lawyer (in case you're curious: when Edward and Jacob got to court, Jacob said "I've never been to law school, but I DID watch Better Call Saul on AMC+ last night, the sound wasn't on and the subtitles were all in Japanese, but I think I got the gist"). But then, Edward pulls out his last-ditch effort, calling Bella to testify for him. Charlie, initially, doesn't believe it's going to work, but when Bella presents some evidence that Aro deems 'Indesputable', Aro finds in favor of Edward, and, in what has to be perhaps the most extreme punishment ever, forces Charlie to pay his CREDIT LIMIT in fines, before sentencing him to 10 years' probation, stating that "if you try anything like this again, Charles (Aro calls people by their full names a lot here, just to give him a bit more of an uppercrust tightwad vibe), the book WILL be thrown at you"
